To know me, you must know that I believe that Spirit is in everything, in every time, and in all places. This belief serves as the bedrock for my spiritual direction practice, as well as my life's spiritual foundation. Through the conscious discipline of taking time to notice the presence, energy, and movement of the Spirit, I believe it is possible to deepen and broaden our awareness of the sacred all around us.
As a spiritual director, I have found this to be true for others as well. Whether the directee has been unassociated, is unfamiliar with any spiritual tradition, or has spent years immersed in a particular wisdom tradition, those that I have accompanied as a spiritual director have found an unexpected depth unfold through this practice of attentive, contemplative listening.
As a Supervisor for Spiritual Directors, this awareness of Spirit manifests as supervisor and supervisee sit together in service of the directee. The well being, and nurture of the directee being central to the practice of supervision, director and supervisor work together to bring to light the ways in which the Spirit might be moving or stuck, expanding or constricted as the director engages with the stories and journey of the directee.
While serving as a chaplain at Hospice By The Bay from 2002 through 2007, I listened to people in their final days as they spoke of spiritual experiences, hopes, and even dreams, sometimes never before mentioned to anyone. While these might have been expressed through a particular lens of culture and/or tradition, each expression included the deeply human need to know ourselves as part of the greater whole, and a unique part of the sacred. In my experience, this was the connecting thread that wove all people, and traditions together.
In addition to my spiritual direction, and supervision practices, I was honored to serve as a liturgical leader and co-pastor of Seventh Avenue Presbyterian Church, in San Francisco, California, from 2003 through 2015. As part of this work, I led retreats, and officiated at weddings, baptisms, and memorials. Part of my work at Seventh Avenue, was also to serve as a small group facilitator, and preacher for Companions on the Inner Way, an internationally known, five-day contemplative retreat.
Currently, I work both as small group leader, as well as a practicum supervisor with the Certificate/Diploma In The Art Of Spiritual Direction, provided through the Christian Spirituality Department of the University of Redlands (previously San Francisco Theological Seminary). My joy and excitement as students learn about contemplative listening skills, and begin to use them as they become spiritual directors, is increased exponentially as the students begin to share with me the integration, and transformation of their spiritual direction skills with friends and family on a daily basis. This affirms for me that spiritual direction is healing work, and a priceless contribution to our fractured and hurting world.
I am incredibly privileged to participate in this work.
My credentials for this work include a Masters of Divinity degree, a Diploma in the Art of Spiritual Direction from the gate.io, and a Certificate for Spiritual Direction Supervision through the Together In The Mystery program.
